Building Foundations: Shaping the First Regional Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security in Central Asia

Event Overview

UN Women, in collaboration with the CAREC Women’s Empowerment Online Platform, will hold a consultation on the first Regional Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security in Central Asia.

Women’s organizations and networks, civil society, academia, and think tanks in Central Asia are invited to participate and share their views to help shape this important plan.

The consultation will happen on 26 September 2025, from 10:00–11:00 (Istanbul) | 12:00–13:00 (Astana) | 13:00–14:00 (Bishkek).

About the Regional Action Plan:

The five Central Asian countries have initiated the development of the first Women, Peace and Security Regional Action Plan for Central Asia to drive transformational change for women’s equal participation and rights in regional peace and security processes. This landmark action plan will serve as a framework to drive regional commitments and support national efforts to advance women’s meaningful participation across the four pillars of WPS agenda: Participation, Prevention, Protection and Relief and Recovery.

The regional action plan aims to foster collaboration in Central Asia to advance implementation of the UNSCR 1325 and to create an environment where women and young women actively participate in addressing new and emerging security threats including water and climate security, emergency preparedness and humanitarian action, as well as prevention of violent extremism and counter-terrorism.

Before the consultation, participants are invited to reflect on the following questions:

  • How do you envision the future of Central Asia in the next five to 10 years? What changes would you like to see within the core pillars of WPS (such as participation, prevention, protection, relief, and recovery), especially in women’s empowerment and their participation in public life?
  • What specific work, projects, or initiatives are you or your organization currently implementing to contribute to the four main WPS pillars? Which projects and initiatives have been successful in promoting positive change in our region in the field of WPS and the priority area of women’s empowerment? Which of these could play a crucial role in the Regional Action Plan, providing a foundation for collaboration and further development?
